For the Costa Ragusa Borgo & Resort project, DEAL carried out the laser scanner survey of the pre-existing structure on site in Ragusa, later incorporated and rebuilt into the new complex, with the goal of delivering a detailed as-built BIM model.

The job started as a survey of just the common areas and the hotel. Through an addendum to the original scope, it then expanded to cover every part of the structure: internal walkways, staff housing, workshops, and underground technical areas. The team essentially handled two jobs in one, covering a total area of around 70-80 hectares.
Fieldwork, carried out with Leica BLK360 and RTC360 laser scanners, took about a month, including the logistical challenge of a site with no power grid, managed through careful planning of the equipment's charging cycles. The survey produced a georeferenced point cloud of around 40.7 billion points, from 5,800 scans linked by roughly 8,000 connections, with cloud-to-cloud accuracy between 3 and 8 mm depending on the area.
From the point cloud, the team modeled the as-built structure in Revit, over about two to three months. Beyond the BIM model, DEAL developed photorealistic renders of the interior and exterior spaces and a navigable animated video of the whole structure, giving the client and the design team tools to explore and manage the complex from the early stages of the renovation.
